Lifestyle - Physical Activity, Mental Health and Nutrition Basic needs at diagnosis

In the Inspire2Live Lifestyle Working Group, we are dedicated to identifying and addressing the most pressing needs of cancer patients at the time of diagnosis.  We have focused our efforts on three crucial aspects: physical activity, mental health, and nutrition.

Physical activity

Physical activity is essential for cancer patients, whether they are aiming to build resilience through prehabilitation before treatment or require rehabilitation during or after treatment. Increasingly, research underscores the profound benefits of moderate to intense exercise, in addition to adequate rest, in helping patients recover more effectively from treatments.  By prioritizing physical conditioning, patients may experience a reduction in the severity of side effects, positioning themselves for a more favourable treatment journey.

Mental health

Mental health is another critical area, as a cancer diagnosis can often lead to a spiral of anxiety, depression, and despair. This psychological burden affects not only patients but also their families and loved ones. Support is essential for both, and while professional guidance is beneficial, a strong network of friends, neighbours, and family can play a vital role in providing comfort and alleviating distress. Encouragingly, there is a wealth of scientific insight supporting various approaches to mental wellness for cancer patients, offering hope and effective paths forward.

Nutrition

Nutrition, too, is often a source of uncertainty. Many patients wonder if their dietary choices contributed to their illness or seek guidance on what to eat to enhance their health and treatment outcomes. Questions about fasting, specific foods, and overall diet are common. Addressing these concerns with scientifically validated information can help patients feel empowered to make dietary choices that support their treatment and recovery.

Lifestyle working group

Through biweekly discussions and ongoing research within the Inspire2Live Lifestyle Working Group, we are committed to staying informed of the latest findings and sharing them with patients and their families. By providing clear, research-supported answers, we aim to offer not only information but also a sense of support, relief, and hope.
