This week an update on a local Dutch issue: the elections for Parliament. For those interested the English translation is provided below.

Dat voor ons als Patient Advocates de nationale politiek belangrijk is, moge duidelijk blijken uit de meters die we ook met de politiek gemaakt hebben op het terrein van excellente kankercentra, waarbij men nu Kamerbreed de postcodezorg afwijst.

Of uit de door ons aangejaagde wetswijziging op het Octrooirecht waardoor magistrale bereiding van geneesmiddelen gemakkelijker is geworden en bereiders ervan beter beschermd worden tegen rechtszaken door farmaceutische bedrijven.

En nu recent natuurlijk de initiatiefnota rond Whole Genome Sequencing en de daaruit voortvloeiende onderzoeksopdracht aan het Zorginstituut en de vijf met algemene stemmen aangenomen moties die de toegang tot nieuwe diagnostische instrumenten versnellen en breder toegankelijk maken. Maar we hebben nog een lange weg te gaan en daarom bij deze een stemadvies. En nee, nou eens niet gebaseerd op een partijprogramma of mijn eigen politieke voorkeur.

Politiek kan namelijk een ondankbaar vak zijn. Vooral de portefeuille van VWS is een ondankbare klus. Over het algemeen kom je dan als aftredend Kamerlid bij de volgende verkiezingen niet hoog op de lijst, soms kom je op een nagenoeg onverkiesbare plek of je verdwijnt zelfs helemaal van de lijst.

Zo staat Rens Raemakers (D66)  nu 19e op de lijst; Hayke Veldman (VVD) is niet meer verkiesbaar; Joba van den Berg (CDA)  staat 16e op de lijst; Léonie Sazias (50PLUS) is 40e op de lijst; Wim Jan Renkema (Groen Links) is 45e op de lijst; Henk van Gerven (SP) is niet meer verkiesbaar.

Daarmee dreigt heel veel kennis en ervaring verloren te gaan en verliezen wij mensen in de landelijke politiek die enthousiast voor onze belangen zijn opgekomen. Nou is het toch al geen garantie dat iemand die wel in de Kamer blijft ook zijn portefeuille houdt. Vaak wordt er na de verkiezingen weer volop geschoven. Maar ik had graag met hen de samenwerking voortgezet.

Daarom deze oproep: Laten wij het nu eens anders doen!

Kies als je nou toch op een van die hierboven genoemde partijen stemt nou eens niet gewoontegetrouw voor de nummer 1 op de lijst. Of voor de eerste vrouw of de eerste met een wat meer exotische achternaam op de lijst.

Breng deze keer eens liever en voor zover mogelijk een voorkeursstem uit op iemand die de afgelopen periode woordvoerder VWS is geweest en dan natuurlijk het liefst eentje die met ons heeft samengewerkt maar die nu op een onverkiesbare plaats staat.

Dat hebben ze allemaal zeer zeker verdiend!

Voting Advice for the national elections

The importance of our national politics for us as Patient Advocates is evident from the progress we have made in politics on:

• the subject of Excellent Cancer Centres, Parliament disapproves of local differences in quality of care
• the change in the law on Patents, making it easier for pharmacists to prepare medicines themselves (formula magistralis) by offering protection against lawsuits by pharmaceutical companies
• and most recently the initiative to make Whole Genome Sequencing the norm for diagnostics in metastasized cancer, together with five other motions that were accepted by parliament unanimously that ease and broaden the the access to new diagnostic instruments.

But there is a long way to go from here, and that’s why we offer an advice for your vote in the next election. And No! It is not based on any particular party programme or my own political preferences.

We know that politics can be a controversial and ungrateful job. The Health portfolio is especially unrewarding.

This often leads to low placings for politicians on the election list for their party in the next elections, or even their disappearance from the list. To name examples:

Rens Raemakers (D66)  is now only 19th on the list; Hayke Veldman (VVD) is no longer on the list; Joba van den Berg (CDA)  is 16th on the list; Léonie Sazias (50PLUS) is 40th on the list; Wim Jan Renkema (Groen Links) is 45th on the list; Henk van Gerven (SP) is no longer on the list.

These were politicians who have represented our cause with enthusiasm, and as things stand we are going to lose them and their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for our causes. Of course there is no guarantee that anyone chosen to the Chamber will keep their portfolio, often elections lead to significant shuffles. But we, Inspire2Live! would have liked to continue our working relationship.

That’s why we make this appeal: Let’s do it differently this time!

Instead of voting for the number one of the list, or the first woman, or the first exotic name on the list of your party of preference, why not give your vote to someone who has had the Health portfolio for that party, and preferably one of the above, who has worked with us but is now low on the list and therefore less likely to be elected.

I think they have all deserved this!
