‘Ik heb wel verstand van de processen in de zorg, ja’. Het is het eerste onderwerp dat Linda opwerpt bij onze eerste ontmoeting in een restaurant in Hoorn. We hadden afgesproken omdat ze wilde horen wat Inspire2Live doet en of ze een bijdrage kon leveren. Je mag wel zeggen dat dit op een prachtige manier uit de hand is gelopen. Wat een betekenis, wat een impact op de zorg, wat een indrukwekkende verschijning is Linda.
Linda is dinsdag 22 december 2020 overleden. We wisten dat het zou gaan gebeuren, het ging steeds slechter met haar. Het berichtje van haar zoon Jeroen deed niettemin de adem stokken van menig patient advocate.
Tijdens ons Annual Congress van dit jaar gaf ze een prachtig overzicht van haar leven en werk. Hoe ze als patiënt naar het leven kijkt (‘I’m the specialist of my own life’), hoe ze als manager van de poli soms geconfronteerd werd met haar besluiten, hoe ze daar een prachtige wending aan gaf en het leven van patiënten, met haar expertise ‘zorgprocessen optimaliseren’, enorm kon verbeteren (‘Walk the talk’). Linda heeft ons geleerd dat je het verschil kunt maken in grote, traditionele organisaties. Focus op de patiënt en vraag wat ze nodig heeft, wie ze is, hoe ze leeft en bouw daar je processen op. Het verbetert het leven van de patiënt, het verbetert het leven van de zorgverleners en het is nog goedkoper ook.
Wat is het mooi om met iemand te leven die hoop werkelijkheid maakt. Die in moeilijke situaties laat zien wat er kan en hoe je dat doet en het zelf laat zien. Haar ambitie is onze ambitie geworden. Omdat het kan en moet. Het verschil maak je in het leven van anderen en dan ontstaat het verschil in je eigen leven. Wat je overkomt heb je zelden in de hand, wat je er mee doet, bepaal jezelf. Of zoals Linda het in haar presentatie tijdens ons congres zei:
“You can’t evade your destiny. It’s how you deal with it.”
Laat me afsluiten met de prachtige woorden van onze patient advocate Tielo:
Linda is een onuitwisbaar voorbeeld hoe een dodelijke kanker toch nog jarenlang weerstaan kan worden met heel veel vreugde, toewijding aan anderen, schoonheid, onwankelbaar verstand en liefde voor het leven.
Zoals ze zelf zei:
“Het gaat om vandaag”

We agreed because she wanted to hear what Inspire2Live does and whether she could contribute. You can say that this got out of hand in a wonderful way. What a meaning, what an impact on care, what an impressive appearance Linda made.
Linda died on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. We knew it was going to happen, her illness was getting worse. The message from her son Jeroen nevertheless took the breath of many of our patient advocates.
During our Annual Congress this year she gave a wonderful overview of her life and work. How she looks at life as a patient (‘I’m the specialist of my own life’), how as manager of the clinic she sometimes was confronted with her own decisions, how she gave a wonderful turn to this and could greatly improve the lives of patients, with her expertise ‘optimizing care processes’ (‘Walk the talk’). Linda taught us that you can make a difference in large, traditional organizations. Focus on the patient and ask what she needs, who she is, how she lives and build your processes on it. It improves the life of the patient, it improves the lives of the caregivers and it is also cheaper.
It’s so beautiful to live with someone who makes hope a reality. Being in difficult situations shows what can be done and how you do it and she shows it herself. Her ambition has become our ambition. Because it can and must be done. The difference you make in the lives of others and then the difference arises in your own life. What happens to you is rarely in your control, what you do with it, is determined by yourself. Or as Linda put it in her presentation at our conference:
“You can’t evade your destiny. It’s how you deal with it.”
Let me end with the wonderful words of our patient advocate Tielo:
Linda is an indelible example of how a deadly cancer can be resisted for years with a great deal of joy, devotion to others, beauty, unshakeable sense and love for life. Like she said:
“Life is about today.”
