Professor Rodrigo Mora Rodríguez on Bridging the gap between basic and applied cancer research

Professor Rodrigo Mora Rodríguez, director of the Costa Rican Research Center on Surgery and Cancer (CICICA) talked to us about Bridging the gap between basic and applied cancer research

The Costa Rican Research Center on Surgery and Cancer

The Costa Rican Research Center on Surgery and Cancer is a interdisciplinary unit dedicated to basic and applied research on surgery and cancer with a focus on the research, development and implementation of new strategies and methodologies for cancer prevention, early diagnosis and precision oncology. The center has 3 divisions:

  1. A specialized clinic for early cancer diangosis and precision oncology
  2. A program on continued education and training on minimally invasive surgery
  3. A specialized laboratory for early cancer diagnosis and precision oncology.

The basic research lines include the study of mechanisms of tumor chemosensitivity, oncoimmunology, tumor microenvironment and the systems biology of cancer including studies on Gene Dosage compensation. Several efforts try to bridge the gap between this basic research and other translational research projects for the development and implementation of novel diagnostic tools. There is an emphasis on machine learning and its application.

About the World Campus Session

Two working examples are presented during this World Campus Session on the use of liquid biopsy and the diagnosis of cervical malignant transformation. Afterwards a great Q&A takes place with the members of the World Campus.
