Who am I

I am Dr. Omar Shamieh, a physician specializing in hospice and palliative medicine, currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in Jordan. My educational journey began with an M.B.B.S. from Bangalore University in India, followed by postgraduate studies in Health Service Administration and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management, DeVry University, USA. I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at John Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center in the USA. Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to advancing palliative care services in Jordan and the broader Middle East. My roles have included Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Jordan and leadership positions in palliative care programs across the region. Notably, I have contributed to national initiatives such as the establishment of the National Palliative & Home Care Strategic Framework and have served as an advisor to the WHO Regional Advisory Group for Palliative Care.

Why

I believe that every individual facing serious illness deserves compassionate, comprehensive care that addresses not only physical symptoms but also emotional, social, and spiritual needs. In regions where palliative care is still developing, patients often lack access to services that can significantly improve their quality of life. My commitment is to bridge this gap by developing sustainable palliative care models, training healthcare professionals, and advocating for policies that integrate palliative care into national health systems. By focusing on education, policy development, and community-based initiatives, I aim to ensure that palliative care becomes an integral part of healthcare delivery, offering dignity and relief to patients and their families during some of life's most challenging times.
