Patient Advocate: Saskia Koopmans-Wernars
I was born in 1962 in Leiden. Currently living in Friesland with my husband, my hunting dogs, cats and horses.
I am the owner of “Koopmans Strategie- & Business ondersteuning” and work as a project/programme manager.
A major project was a symposium for Breast Cancer patients held on the 31st of October in Putten. I organized this symposium together with my sister who suffered from Breast Cancer in 2012. One of the goals was to break the taboo of this kind of cancer. One of the seven women gets Breast Cancer. The other goal was to initiate a symposium from cancer patients for cancer patients where the participants could be themselves, ask all their questions to specialists, medical and other. More info is to be found at www.borstkankersymposium.nl/. We have also initiated a Workforce called Kanker en Arbeid. More info is to be found at www.kankerenarbeid.nl
This summer, in connection with the Breast Cancer Symposium, I met Peter Kapitein again, he was my colleague at DNB around 1988, he asked me to join the Inspire2Live organization and become a Patient Advocate.
My father, he died in 1988 at the age of 54 and my mother, she died in 1991 at the age of 56, suffered from cancer. That changed my life completely.
My motto is live life to the fullest. My goal is to make sure that cancer patients can have a life where they can hold a job or work and will not be placed outside society. As a Patient Advocate at Inspire2Live, I want to work on putting this high on the lobby agenda in The Hague.
