Bart Sikkens

My name is Bart Sikkens (1971) and I feel passionate about helping people to shape their life’s purpose. As a leadership expert, I facilitate professionals to realize their intentions and help them to transform (emotional) obstacles. During the last years I work as an interim manager in the Care & Cure sector. Since 2010 I am the proud father of daughter Issey Lotus May. Together we are part of the KWF Alpe d’HuZes support team since 2011. Since 2006 every year thousands of people cycle up the infamous French Alpe (as a metaphor for the battle against cancer). Thanks to thousands inspired individuals (who stand together as 1 team) millions of euros are raised that are used for improving and innovating cancer research.

My career started in 1996 at health insurance company FBTO ACHMEA. As a young and passionate manager, I wrote a proposal for a more proactive insurance plan with a clear aim: award clients that are willing to stop smoking, become more physically active and eat healthier. How? By lowering their monthly insurance costs. Unfortunately, it took over 15 years for that plan to be realized by another insurance company. In the 20 years since then I have tried to understand the leading principles underlying Strategy, Leadership and Innovation within companies. But as Peter Drucker says: “culture eats strategy for breakfast”. That’s why I feel comfortable consulting boards of directors about behaviour and change.

After 20 years of research I have sadly concluded that most companies have only one aim and that is to make (more) money. Even in many hospitals I visited I got to know managers that were more concerned with hitting their production targets than with offering clients the best possible care. I realize now that our Health system is in serious problems… If you want to know how deep the rabbit hole goes I suggest you read Peter Kapitein’s latest book.

My personal purpose is to improve the patient oriented way of working of oncology care within Dutch hospitals. As part of the patients advocates team my mission is to raise awareness of board members, directors and managers to organize their systems around patients. And to cooperate with patients from the start of a new process. And to invite everybody to become Power Patients.
